Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan, founder of APWA was the wife of Pakistan’s First Prime Minister. She was a woman of outstanding achievements whose contribution to human rights and social welfare was acclaimed nationally and internationally. Her efforts to mobilize women within the voluntary cadre gained her many prestigious awards. She was the first Muslim woman to win the Human Rights Award. Her passion for humanitarian causes and pioneering of woman in the cause of woman rights has provided them with a blue print from which they can act together in order to achieve a more progressive and united community of Pakistanis worldwide.
Her ability for organizing the national committee was displayed in her choice of members which also included many women of distinction from the minority communities. From the national field, in which it received recognition by the Government of Pakistan, APWA moved to the international arena when she won for APWA. The U.N recognition as a non-governmental organization (N.G.O) with consultative status. She then linked it with other women’s international organizations with the same objective. APWA also established branches in U.K, and New York.
As a sociologist and a trained economist she emphasized the danger to the country in ostentatious living in the midst of wretched poverty.
Begam Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan is best known as the Founder Life President of the All Pakistan Women’s Association (APWA), which has worked since 1949 as the hub and center for the emancipation of women of all creeds, culture and denominations, with branches spread over both rural and urban areas in all the provinces and also branches in other parts of the world.
“She suffered tragic bereaving when her husband was assassinated, but the spirit of Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan was undaunted, the soul unconquered. By her courageous response to the supreme challenge she earned for herself a niche not only in Pakistan and Asia but in World History” (F.D. Douglas).
